At U Store It, safety and security sit at the core of everything we do. It is how we protect your belongings, our team, and the wider facility.
To maintain that standard, there are certain items that cannot be stored. While some may seem unexpected, these guidelines are in place to reduce risk and ensure a safe, secure environment for everyone.
Here is a full rundown of what not to store in a self-storage unit, and why.
Why Do Storage Units Have Prohibited Items?
Storage facilities are shared environments. What happens in one unit can very quickly affect the units around it, the building itself, and the people who work there. Certain materials pose serious risks, from fire and chemical contamination to health hazards and structural damage.
Beyond safety, many prohibited items are governed by Irish regulations, meaning storage facilities are legally required to refuse them. It is not a matter of preference; it is a matter of compliance and common sense.
Hazardous and Flammable Materials
Flammable Liquids and Materials
This includes petrol, diesel, paint thinners, solvents, aerosols, and similar substances. These materials are highly volatile and can ignite with very little provocation, particularly in an enclosed space where temperatures can fluctuate. Even small quantities pose a significant fire risk to the entire facility.
Gas Tanks
Pressurised gas cylinders, whether they contain propane, butane, or any other gas, are strictly off limits. The combination of pressure and flammable contents makes them an explosion hazard, especially in a confined storage environment where temperature changes are common.
Oxidising Materials
Oxidising agents accelerate combustion and can cause other materials to catch fire far more easily. Common examples include certain fertilisers, pool chemicals, and industrial cleaning agents. Even when stored alone, these materials can be unstable and dangerous.
Explosives
This one should go without saying, but fireworks, ammunition, and any explosive device or material are completely prohibited. The risk to people, property, and neighbouring units is obvious, and the legal consequences of storing explosives without proper authorisation are severe.
Organic Peroxides
Organic peroxides are chemically unstable compounds that can combust spontaneously, particularly when exposed to heat or contamination. They are primarily used in industrial and laboratory settings, and have no place in a self-storage unit under any circumstances.
Electrical and Battery-Powered Items (With Active Lithium Batteries)
This is an area that catches many people off guard, particularly with the rise of electric personal transport. The issue here is not the items themselves, but the batteries that power them.
E-Scooters, E-Bikes and Variants
E-scooters, e-bikes, and similar electric personal transport devices are not permitted in storage units when they contain their lithium batteries. Lithium batteries, particularly when damaged, improperly charged, or stored in warm conditions, are prone to a process called thermal runaway, which can cause rapid overheating and fire. If you need to store an e-bike or e-scooter, speak to your facility team about the correct procedure.
Batteries (Lithium, Lithium-Ion, Lead-Acid)
Loose or standalone batteries, particularly lithium, lithium-ion, and lead-acid types, are prohibited. Lithium batteries can leak, short circuit, or ignite if stored incorrectly. Lead-acid batteries present a corrosion and acid spillage risk. Neither belongs in a shared storage environment.
Power Banks
Power banks contain lithium-ion cells and carry the same fire risk as standalone batteries. Many people do not consider power banks a hazardous item, but they have been the source of fires in storage facilities globally. They are not permitted.
Petrol Engines
Lawnmowers, generators, chainsaws, and other petrol-powered equipment are prohibited unless they have been fully drained of all fuel and oil. Even residual traces of petrol in a tank create a fire risk. If you are storing petrol-powered equipment, drain and clean it thoroughly before bringing it in, and check with your facility manager beforehand. Take a look at our FAQ page for more guidance on what is and is not permitted.
Toxic and Infectious Substances
Toxic Substances
Pesticides, heavy-duty chemical cleaners, rat poison, and other toxic materials cannot be stored in a self-storage unit. In the event of a leak or spill, these substances can contaminate adjacent units, damage flooring and walls, and pose a serious health risk to staff and other customers. Many are also subject to strict disposal regulations under Irish law.
Infectious Substances
Biological materials, medical waste, and any substance that could harbour or transmit disease are strictly prohibited. This applies to both residential and business customers. If you work in healthcare or research and need storage solutions for compliant materials, speak to a specialist provider who is equipped to handle them safely.
A Quick Reference: Prohibited Items at a Glance
To summarise, here is a straightforward list of what you cannot store in a self-storage unit:
- E-scooters, e-bikes, and electric personal transport (with lithium batteries fitted)
- Lithium, lithium-ion, and lead-acid batteries (loose or standalone)
- Power banks
- Flammable liquids and materials (petrol, solvents, aerosols)
- Gas tanks and pressurised cylinders
- Infectious or biological substances
- Petrol engines (unless fully drained and approved by your facility manager)
- Toxic substances (pesticides, heavy chemicals)
- Radioactive materials
- Oxidising materials
- Explosives, ammunition, and fireworks
- Organic peroxides
What Happens If You Store Prohibited Items?
Storing prohibited items is not permitted under your storage agreement and may require us to take action to keep the facility safe for everyone. This could include asking you to remove certain items, and in some cases, additional steps may be needed depending on the situation.
Our team carries out regular checks and is trained to identify anything that may pose a risk. If something does not seem quite right, we will look into it to ensure the safety and security of all customers and their belongings.
Not Sure If Your Items Are Allowed? Just Ask.
If you are not certain whether something can go into storage, the simplest thing to do is ask before you arrive. Our team at U Store It is always happy to help you figure out the best approach, whether that means advising on how to prepare an item for storage or pointing you in the right direction for specialist disposal.
We have facilities across Ireland in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Waterford, and Galway, with flexible unit sizes to suit everything from a few boxes to the contents of an entire home or business. Get in touch with your local team today and we will be happy to help.
