Our day-to-day life is frenetic. And in this daily frenzy, a smart way to optimise our routine and make better use of our time is to organise our living space in a planned and harmonious way.

It is very common, in the day-to-day running, to store our objects improperly, storing them in the first vacant place we find. However, in addition to harming its use, this habit will make us waste time looking for it the next time we need it.

This blog post aims to point out the most common mistakes we make when storing objects:

Confusing organising with tidying up

This is the main mistake. It must be understood that organising and tying up are different actions. Both aim to make the home environment beautiful and pleasant. The difference is that tidying up is temporary and purely aesthetic, while the organisation is rational, personalised and permanent.

Not letting go of what is no longer in use or needed

A mistake that many of us make is to store objects we no longer use. Whether it’s because of personal affection or because we think we’ll still need them in the future, it’s common to find cabinets full of these items.

In addition to occupying essential space, these items also accumulate dust. So, whenever possible, take some time to separate the things you no longer use and want to donate or sell and the items you which to keep but are better stored in a proper location like in a self-storage unit.

Piling-up multiple objects

Another mistake that is related to the previous one is piling up several objects. Keeping a lot of magazines, books, and DVDs, among other items, clustered one on top of the other is a quick but not at all the most practical way of storing your things.

Imagine having to move all your clothes to pick up a single piece that is underneath the pile or risking knocking down all your books when trying to rescue a title that is among the others.

Not correctly identifying boxes

Nothing worse than spending hours upon hours looking for an important object and not knowing where it is. Often, we confuse storage with organisation, and we pack our items in boxes and packages without identification.

Therefore, specifying the items we store inside the boxes is crucial so that we do not waste time looking for them. Ideally, you should label the packaging with what is being stored inside them or keep a list inside the box with the description of all items that are in it.

Not protecting the objects when storing them

Storing and safeguarding your items in a proper way is a critical and efficient way of extending their “shelf life”, preventing them from deteriorating over time.

By storing objects wrapped in newspapers, cardboard and bubble wrap, their conservation and durability will be much higher as things will be better protected from accidental falls, heat and humidity.

Having too much furniture

Having excess furniture in the house is a serious mistake. First, this situation creates a false illusion that we have plenty of space available, urging us to store unnecessary things. Secondly, too much furniture occupies large areas and leaves the environment tighter and cramped.

Having many chairs, sofas, desks, and decorative items can quickly make a room appear cluttered and suffocating. Choosing just a few selected pieces can open up space in your home and make it more relaxing and peaceful.

Not considering functionality

This is a very common mistake that usually transforms our daily routine into a complex and time-consuming process.

When organising a space, try to plan the arrangement of objects practically and functionally in mind. That is, leave the items you use most in places that are easy to reach or quick to access.

Spreading similar objects in different places

Give each object a fixed location. Summer clothes should be all in the same wardrobe, the jewellery all in the same drawer or box, etc. You should try to organise your wardrobes, shelves and cabinets in a functional way because if everything has a fixed place, it will be easier to put it there again and not lose it or forget about it.

Not finding suitable storage solutions

Often, we have valuable and important objects to store, but we do not have much free space in our house or apartment. In this case, a practical and efficient solution is to book a suitable and private place to accommodate your personal or work items.

Booking a self-storage unit is an affordable and safe option for storing your belongings without compromising all the available space in your home.

Storing items in a proper, practical and safe way is one of the challenges we encounter when organising our homes due to the number of items we usually accumulate and also because nowadays, the living spaces tend to be smaller and more compact.

Therefore, finding ways to pack and store essential items is critical to keeping them safe and protected, preserving them from the action of time.
